Der geplante Besuch in Bonn, mit dem beide Seiten gegensätzliche Erwartungen verbanden, kam aufgrund seines Sturzes im Oktober 1964 nicht mehr zustande. Insgesamt blieb trotz aller Anstrengungen seine mit Ambitionen überfrachtete Westpolitik erfolglos.
